ABSTRACT: Brazil is often characterized by an abundance of water. However recurrent events of water scarcity in the different regions of the country and the multiple impacts that can be triggered and intensified by the process of climate change, demonstrate the importance of continuous management of this resource. A region where it has been considered an alternative to guarantee the water demands of important centers for the development of the country, inside as outside its borders, is the Paraíba do Sul Basin (PSB). Considering the importance of Guandú basin water transferring to meet the water and energy demands of the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro, the present study aims to analyze the future variability of water resources, with main focus on the water transfer to the Guandú basin, and the PSBs power generation variability, considering the process of climate change. The comparison of the projections of the flows and amount of energy generated in future scenarios with the reference scenario, show a high influence of climatic processes in the variations of water availability in the basin, in addition to a general tendency of reduction of water availability, mainly in the scenarios of higher greenhouse gas emissions. |
