| Resumo | Historical cold waves in Brazil left a legacy of impacts on the agricultural sector and public health throughout the 20th century. Understanding the dynamics of atmospheric circulation associated with cold extremes is fundamental to elaborate mitigating measures to reduce impacts on society and crops. Therefore, the objective of this work is to carry out a synoptic and large-scale detailed analysis of the strong and long-lasting cold wave that acted in the country in early June 1985. For this purpose, data from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecast Reanalysis v.5 (ERA5) reanalysis with a horizontal resolution of 0.25º were used to elaborate synoptic fields. The results show that the cold wave had two pulses: the first one with a faster and less intense cold air incursion associated with an amplified wave of a stationary character in the upper atmosphere. The second pulse occurred by a reamplification process of a pre-existent wave. This process led to the formation of a block over the Atlantic Ocean. The configuration of the surface pressure field persisted on the east coast of South America and maintained consecutive days of southern winds over the interior of Brazil. | |||
