AbstractThe use of the eutrophication risk index as a tool for managing water resources in the São Francisco River basin in Brazil. Human activities have globally impacted biogeochemical cycles, necessitating joint efforts to optimize nutrient cycles for food and energy production while safeguarding social and economic well-being. Latin American countries must prioritize better nutrient management to reduce water pollution. The study aims to evaluate nutrient practices in the SFRB and develop a Eutrophication Risk Index (ERI) based on specialized soil P balance and nutrient loading from urban wastewater. The ERI quantifies P contributions to aquatic environments from urban effluent and excess nutrients applied to the soil (kg ha-1 year-1). Results revealed that agricultural practices were the primary source of nutrient export to waterbodies in the Uppe, Middle, Sub-Middle, and Extended sub-basins (65 to 98%). However, in the Lower sub-basin, urban areas contributed more nutrients (54%). Considerable heterogeneity in P exports was observed between sub-basins. The Medium SFR sub-basin, dominated by intensive agricultural and pastoral lands, had the highest P export (1.83 kg P ha-1). In contrast, the sub-medium SFR sub-basin (155.6 km2) exported 0.46 kg P ha-1, and the low SFR sub-basin (32 km2) exported 0.22 kg P ha-1. Notably, highly urbanized municipalities showed peaks of P export, reaching a maximum of 27.9 kg P ha-1 year-1 in the Upper SFR sub-basin. The proposed ERI proved effective in identifying regions at risk of water impairments due to increased phosphorus concentrations. Understanding the contribution of P losses to water quality impairment at the basin scale is crucial for guiding protective measures for water resources and identifying areas of high risk to ecosystem service integrity.
